Samsung to produce 12.1-inch “Mini-notebook” with Via Nano

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

mini notebookCurtesy of JK on the Run: The official word comes today that Samsung is going to produce a 12.1-inch notebook, the NC20. The NC20 is a larger cousin to the NC10 netbook from Samsung and this larger version will ship with a Via Nano processor.

VIA, who is likely quite happy with the Psion netbook trademark situation, has always referred to these small notebooks as “mini-notebooks” rather than recognize Intel’s “netbook” preference and that’s what VIA is calling the NC20. This new notebook from Samsung will use a 1.3 GHz VIA Nano processor and a 12.1-inch display that delivers 1280×800 resolution out of the box. The integrated VIA Chrome9 graphics set this apart from the Atom-based netbooks shipping today.

Specifications:

Screen: 12.1″ LED WXGA (1280 x 800)
CPU: VIA Nano™ ULV Processor U2250 (1.3+GHz, 800MHz)
Chipset: VIA VX800 Unified Digital Media IGP Chipset
Graphics: Integrated VIA Chrome9™ with DirectX 9.0 3D graphics support and hardware video acceleration
OS: Microsoft○R Windows○R XP Home Edition
Memory: 1GB DDR2 (1*SODMM)
Storage: 160GB HDD (9.5mmH 2.5”HDD, SATA)
Webcam: 1.3 Mega pixels web camera
LAN: 10/100Mbps LAN
Wireless: Atheros 802.11 b/g
Bluetooth: 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate)
I/O Ports: USB2.0 x 3, Ethernet LAN, 3-in-1 card reader
Battery: 6 cells Li-ion Battery Standard, 6.5 hours life
Dimensions: 292.4mm x 217mm x 30.7mm
Weight: 1.52kg
Colours: White

Nice battery life. My TC1100 has 3 hours batter life (that’s with all programs closed, minimal software running–with programs open and software on, about 35 minutes). Nice web cam built in, though it looks as if these are a mainstay for mini-notebooks, laptops and mids.

Review of HP 1000 Mini Mi from Slashgear

HP 1000 Mini Mi

HP 1000 Mini Mi

Slashgear posted a great review of the new (and overtly cutely names) HP 1000 Mini Mi.

we’ve reviewed the budget ultraportable and, dare we say it, moved on to excitement over its rivals. However there’s one last Mini 1000 variant to play with, that with HP’s new Mobile Internet Experience (MIE) - a Linux-based version of the netbook with the company’s own custom GUI. James Kendrick found one on his doorstep, and gave some first-impressions.

Under the hood, the HP Mini 1000 MI is little changed from its Windows XP siblings. A 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB SSD for storage and a 10-inch LED-backlit display, together with a 3-cell battery, two standard USB 2.0 ports, multiformat card reader and a tweaked USB port for HP’s own Mini Mobile Drive.

This page shows email (including unread headers), web page thumbnails, search bar, Music player and Photos player right on the home page. There is also a task bar at the bottom of the page that graphically shows what is running and beneath that is a button that looks like the OQO logo which fires up a task manager similar to that of OS X.

The little HP logo in the lower left corner of the home page will take you back to the home page no matter what is being displayed as will tapping the HP button (formerly known as the Windows key) on the keyboard. In the bottom right of the screen is the system bar where you can track network connections, battery life, etc.” James Kendrick

So it’s the software that’s the interesting part, and happily HP seem to have done a good job prioritizing what most netbook users will be intending to do with their new budget ultraportable. The home-page has previews and shortcuts for emails and webpages (with a custom Firefox-based browser), together with instant access to multimedia. Perhaps not enough flexibility for those who see netbooks as a cheap way to tinker with a new notebook (though there’s standard Ubuntu lurking underneath the MIE) but one of the better GUIs for Linux that we’ve seen so far for beginners.
