Apple orders 10-inch touchscreens for third quarter

From Yahoo Tech: Apple will take third-quarter delivery of newly developed 10-inch touchscreens from Taiwan, a source said on Wednesday, amid talk the U.S. firm is developing a touchscreen PC.

Taiwan touchscreen specialist Wintek already makes small screens for Apple iPhones, and has received orders for the larger ones that are roughly the same size as those used in mini PCs, said the source close to the Taiwan firm. He asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

He added that he did not know what the final product would be, or who would make it.

Wintek spokesman James Chen confirmed Apple was a major client of his company, but declined to comment on any new product development.

Taiwan media reported this week that Apple, which has brought touchscreens to the forefront with the success of its iPhones, is currently developing a touchscreen PC, as lines begin to blur between sophisticated smartphones and traditional PCs.

Some of those reports have said that Taiwan’s Quanta Computer, the world’s top contract laptop PC maker, would manufacture the actual PCs for Apple.

Apple’s Hong Kong spokeswoman, Jill Tan, said the company did not comment on market speculation, while a Quanta spokeswoman also declined to comment.

If this is true, iPhone fanatics will be close to impossible to live with.

The finished product will be interesting to see. The testing, jailbreaking and whatnot will be something to look forward to. Makes one wonder how apple will respond to all those hacks, tweaks and ‘upgrades’ to their newest product.

Acer Tablet Patent 4

Acer files Tablet PC patent.

Long have I wished Compaq/HP extended the Tablet PC line from the ever popular TC1100, what I currently have. It is the perfect form factor for those of us that like the Slate PC with the option of having a keyboard.

From Gotta Be Mobile, Electronic Pulp has gotten their hands on a recent Acer patent showing a “portable electronic device” that resembles a netbook/MID. Little information is known although there is a slide up QWERTY keyboard underneath the screen, it has 3 USB ports, 1 FireWire, Optical Disk Drive, ExpressCard slot, d-pad, Touchpad with left and right buttons, and possible infrared.

My TC1100 has both bluetooth and infrared and Acer’s Tablet PC has at least infrared. No other information has been put forth. So if you know something or have ideas, let us know.

Minimalist Web Tablet Prototype for $299

From Gizmodo: Michael Arrington’s Minimalist Web Tablet Prototyped, Fulfills (Most) Promises

This is a great idea for students, elderly, people on budgets, or looking for a backup web tablet. Kudos go out to Michael Arrington for thinking of this idea and seeing it through. Not many people would have the courage, let alone the gumption, to develop and start a whole new type of tablet.

It’s not a fully functioning PC, per se, more like a web browsing tablet, if I’m reading correctly. From the article about stats: Behind the screen is a a Via Nano processor, 1GB of RAM and a 4GB flash drive, running a stock Ubuntu install and a custom WebKit browser .
